21 Questions with Phil Grant

Grants Turf owner and all round larrikin Phil Grant likes to have a good time. Which is fitting since he is in charge of social functions and the Turf Tour for the Victorian Greenkeepers Association. We asked Phil our infamous 21 questions, here’s what he had to say.

Place of work and position:
  Owner and operator of Grant’s Turf.
How long have you been in the industry & background? 26 years. I started at Reservoir Bowling club at the end of 1988.
Just me and my sister.
Favourite food:
Anything that’s cooked for me!

Favourite movie: Nacho Libre.
Favourite band/ artist:
Favourite sporting team:
Favourite sport:
Motor racing, V8 Supercars and historic racing.

Hobbies: Collecting memorabilia, racing cars, restoring cars. I don’t really have time for much else.
Drinker / favourite drink:
Beer or Bourbon.
Places travelled:
Fiji, England, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Amsterdam – all through that Europe passage. And a fair few states in America.


Favourite machine / equipment used in the workplace: Pro Turf corer.
What would make your job easier?
Your biggest mistake in the workplace:
Becoming a greenkeeper.
Personal work motto:
Don’t employ idiots.

Who has influenced you most professionally?: One of my first bosses, Paul Thomas. He was good at his job, a very good tradesman.
Who is your dream date?
Elizabeth Hurley.
Describe your home garden:
Wouldn’t win any prizes at a garden show.

Funniest moment you have had in the workplace: When the sprinklers went off at one of the bowls clubs I had, on a Tuesday of Pennant. It covered all the ladies dressed in white in recycled water. It was a beauty, got about 12 of them. They had white uniforms on, and had brown stains all over.


Who would you turn gay for? George Clooney.
