Central Oval Turf Upgrade Commences

Written by:

Work on the Central Oval turf upgrade is set to commence on Tuesday 8th October 2019.

A contract has been signed with Belair Turf for the work with grant funding of $486,500 provided through the Office for Recreation, Sport & Racing’s Grassroots Football, Netball and Cricket Fund.

The project, which includes new irrigation, removal and replacement of base soil, ‘crowning’ of the oval surface to improve drainage, and new turf is designed to enable the potential inclusion of a turf wicket for cricket in the future if required.

Whilst the ground works is commencing now, the new turf will not be laid until January 2020 to ensure availability of ongoing monitoring during the critical growing period.

Council has commenced removal of a portion of the existing turf for use at other Council sites including Stirling North Garden Cemetery.

This project will provide an optimum playing surface for local sports, reduce maintenance costs in the longer term whilst also provide an opportunity for Council to pursue State and National level sporting games.
