The 2020 NRL grand final could be stolen by Queensland as NSW faces the prospect of a venue squeeze.
With Sydney’s premier rugby league stadium – ANZ Stadium – set for construction, and Allianz still out of commission, the Sydney Cricket Ground was locked in as the host of this year’s competition decider.
But the coronavirus lockdown has forced the grand final back to October 25, and that date is far from cemented as the NRL rushes to finalise a reduced season draw.
Cricket may yet take precedence and force rugby league off the hallowed SCG turf, leaving NSW a little light on for suitable venues.
But Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium is widely regarded as the best atmosphere in the NRL and Queensland is crying out to host a grand final.
The news was music to the ears of Queensland legend Mal Meninga.
“Hallelujah. When you talk about sheer crowd, audiences and things… 56,000 at Suncorp would go off, it would go off,” Meninga told Fox League Live.
“As a passionate Queenslander I believe if things worked out that way, we haven’t got ANZ Stadium, we’ve got the SCG… I think Suncorp would be an amazing venue for the grand final.”
