Jacobsen, the commercial mower and turf maintenance equipment manufacturer, supported a two-day training seminar for technicians, ahead of the CIMB Classic, held at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (KLGCC).
The training, for both superintendents and technicians, was sponsored by the Golf Course Superintendents’ Association of Malaysia (GCSAM).
The tournament is the first US PGA Tour event outside of mainland USA and received full FedEx Cup points, full Money List and World Ranking status. The winner was the American golfer Ryan Moore, who beat fellow countryman Gary Woodland in a play-off after many rain delays.
On the two days prior to the tournament Jacobsen, together with their local distributor Sime Darby Industrial Sdn Bhd, supported a training and educational seminar programme for 36 volunteers, superintendents and technicians from around the region.
Glen Forsdike, Customer Support Manager from Jacobsen’s Ipswich manufacturing plant in the UK, flew to Kuala Lumpur to help Glenn Wright, Technical Training Manager for Asia Pacific and Kajapathy Duraimaniam of Sime Darby, present the training to the technicians in the group.
The first day was devoted to the theory of basic hydraulic systems and safety symbols. The delegates were split into four groups and each group completed exercises on four different Jacobsen machines. Each training session lasted two hours, after which the groups rotated and by the end of the day they completed exercises at each machine.
The second day covered electrical systems and followed the same format as the previous day. The rotation was completed by mid-afternoon at which time the superintendents, who had their own programme organised by KLGCC’s superintendent Mohd Nizam Othman and Andy Johnson from Sentosa, joined the technicians for a grinding workshop run by Steve Wilson from Bernhards and a sprayer calibration exercise run by Glenn Wright.
Commenting on the two-day event, Glenn Wright said,
“This education programme went extremely well and was enthusiastically received by all the participants. The involvement of the delegates was superb and their thirst for knowledge was insatiable. We had lots of questions and more than a few laughs due to the relaxed atmosphere at KLGCC’s world-class maintenance facility. The KLGCC team did a great job with Mohd Nizam Othman, the Golf Course Superintendent, Abas Ismail, the Workshop Manager and all their staff opening the doors of their facility and going out of their way to make everyone welcome.
“What was impressive was that KLGCC were hosting their third major tournament of the year – they hosted the European PGA Maybank Malaysian Open in March and the Sime Darby LPGA tournament barely two weeks before the CIMB. That has to be a world first! No club has ever hosted three tournaments in one calendar year, one each from the USPGA, EPGA and LPGA.”
