Canberra’s Manuka Oval can stake a claim on fifth spot in the pecking order of Australian cricket grounds this summer.
Spin legend Shane Warne said the historic first Test this summer was the perfect opportunity for the ACT ground to put its hand up for future fixtures.
He said the MCG, SCG, Adelaide Oval and Perth’s new stadium currently sat at the top, but Manuka could challenge Brisbane and Tasmania on the next rung.
Canberra’s set for a bumper summer of cricket, headlined by Australia’s Test against Sri Lanka in February.
Warne said sellout crowds would set Manuka up for the future.
“The facilities are fantastic … I enjoyed playing here, I’d love to see more cricket up here,” Warne said.
“You’ve got your big ones – Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth now with the new stadium. They get sold out, but Tasmania and Brisbane have dropped off a bit.
“So maybe it’s a great opportunity for Canberra to step up and say, ‘Hey, we’ve got a Test match this summer’.
“So do a good job and make sure it’s packed up and hopefully we’ll get some more cricket up here too, which will be good.”
