Spy cameras set up at Berhampore golf course

Camouflaged cameras are secretly monitoring Berhampore golf course’s under-threat back nine.

Wellington City Council is considering slashing the public south Wellington course in half though Mayor Justin Lester has pledged to try to keep it as-is.

But in recent weeks a camouflaged spy-cam has been strapped to a banksia tree beside the 10th hole’s tee-off area so the council can monitor how much the back nine holes are used.

One of the camouflaged cameras Wellington City Council has installed on the golf course.

The council’s open space and parks manager Myfanwy Emeny said it had installed two cameras around the course.

“This is to gather high level data about the number of golfers using the course, which will help council to make decisions on the future of the site.

“This was discussed with the club at a meeting a few weeks ago. None of the images will be used for any identifiable purposes.”

They were in addition to counters already at the course but, unlike counters, cameras were able to differentiate between golfers and other users.
