Richie Benaud Oval, like its namesake, may soon be dedicated to cricket.
Parramatta Council approved $120,000 for the creation of a masterplan for the Belmore Park ground and a budget of $350,000 to replace the synthetic pitch with a turf wicket.
Labor councillor Donna Davis said an upgraded field would give residents something to “be proud of”.
“Parramatta Cricket Club has been in existence for 175 years and we have not been able to provide them with a field,” she said.
“All we’re asking is that Richie Benaud Oval become a cricket oval and give them facilities that are of 21st Century quality.”
Liberal councillor Martin Zaiter said: “I played there for seven years with the Parramatta Eels juniors, this field has been used by so many juniors from five up to A Grade.”
The park currently has a single synthetic cricket wicket between two rugby league fields.
It has been shared by junior cricket and junior rugby league clubs for more than 50 years but Parramatta Cricket Club argues the ground should be for its exclusive use in order to attract first-class matches.
